Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA; COMECON) A former organization of Soviet-bloc countries formed in 1949 to promote the economic interdependence of its member states. The members were Bulgaria, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, German Democratic Republic (
GDR), Hungary, Mongolia, Poland, Romania, USSR, and Vietnam. COMECON was replaced in 1991 by an organization designed to help those economies integrate with the rest of Europe.
