Woodruff, Henry (Ingott)

Woodruff, Henry [Ingott] (1870–1916), actor. The son of a prosperous New York businessman, he made his debut in the famous 1879 juvenile company of H.M.S. Pinafore and subsequently acted with Daniel E. Bandmann, Adelaide Neilson, and other celebrities. In 1893 he was Charley Wykeham in the first American production of Charley's Aunt. Woodruff then left the stage to attend Harvard, later resuming his career and displaying his versatility in important roles in Shakespearean revivals, musical comedies, and contemporary farce and drama. His slightly pudgy, boyish good looks and comic skills helped him score his biggest success as the nobly self‐sacrificing collegian Brown in Brown of Harvard (1906). In 1909 he starred in the Chicago musical The Prince of Tonight, in which he introduced the standard “I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now.” For several years before his early death he toured in vaudeville.
