Vidal, Gore (b. 1925), playwright. Born in West Point, New York, the caustic but brilliantly witty writer, while better known as a novelist, has also written several superior plays. His biggest successes were the thought‐provoking sci fi comedy
Visit to a Small Planet (1957) and the political drama
The Best Man (1960). Vidal's other works were
Romulus (1962),
Weekend (1968), and
An Evening with Richard Nixon and. . . (1972). Biography:
