Uhry, Alfred (b. 1936), playwright. He was born in Atlanta and educated at Brown University before making his Manhattan playwriting debut as co‐author of the libretto for the short‐lived musical
Here's Where I Belong (1968). Uhry's libret‐to for
The Robber Bridegroom (1974) was much more successful, and his play
Driving Miss Daisy (1987) ran Off Broadway for three years, winning the
Pulitzer Prize. His comedy‐drama
The Last Night of Ballyhoo (1997) was a hit on Broadway, and his script for the dark musical
Parade (1998) at
Lincoln Center was highly praised. Much of Uhry's work is set in the American South in the past, often dealing with Jews in a narrow‐minded society.
