Tone, Franchot (1905–68), actor. Born in Niagara Falls, New York, the lanky, somewhat swarthy leading man studied at Cornell, then made his professional debut with a stock company in Buffalo. Broadway first saw him in
The Belt (1927), followed by such major roles as the unhappy publisher Tom Ames in
Hotel Universe (1930), cowhand Curly McClain in
Green Grow the Lilacs (1931), aristocrat Will Connelly in
The House of Connelly (1931), racketeer Harold Goff in
The Gentle People (1939), the psychoanalyst Alan Coles in
Oh, Men! Oh, Women! (1953), and the dissipated young James Tyrone in
A Moon for the Misbegotten (1957). He was long popular in films as well.
