Secret Garden, The

Secret Garden, The (1991), a musical play by Marsha Norman (book, lyrics), Lucy Simon (music). [St. James Theatre, 706 perf.] Frances Hodgson Burnett's beloved tale, about the morose orphaned girl Mary Lennox ( Daisy Eagan) and the new life she discovers when she brings her dead aunt's garden back to life, was presented as a lovely chamber piece accented by Heidi Landesman's ingenious sets and held together by masterful direction by Susan Schulman. Mandy Patinkin was Mary's gloomy Uncle Archibald; John Babcock was his bedridden son, Colin; Alison Fraser the understanding maid Martha; Rebecca Luker the ghost of Aunt Lily; and John Cameron Mitchell the Yorkshire conjurer Dickon. Notable songs: Lily's Eyes; Winter's on the Wing; Where in the World; Race You to the Top of the Morning.
