Price, The (1968), a play by Arthur
Miller. [
Morosco Theatre, 429 perf.] Two estranged brothers, the policeman Victor ( Pat
Hingle) and the doctor Walter ( Arthur
Kennedy), meet again after sixteen years to sell the family possessions to the aged furniture dealer Gregory Solomon ( Harold Gary), and recriminations about the past arise, including Walter's leaving Victor to support the family when he went to medical school. Victor's bitter wife, Esther ( Kate Reid), does not help matters and, after some revelations are made that sober up both brothers, the two part with their differences still unresolved. The engrossing drama was produced by Robert
Whitehead and others and was commended for its rich characterizations, including Miller's finest comic creation, the crusty old Solomon. It was revived on Broadway in 1979 and 1999, and John
Tillinger directed a fine Off‐Broadway revival at the
Roundabout in 1992.
