Plympton, Eben (1853–1915), actor. The handsome, virile leading man was born and educated in Boston, where he took a job as bookkeeper on the
Boston Post until a breakdown in his health forced him to leave for California. There he recuperated and then made his stage debut in 1871. Plymton appeared at Wallack's in New York but secured his career portraying André in
Rose Michel (1875). Important Shakespearean assignments followed as Sebastian and Romeo in 1877, then he won applause as Walter Dalrymple in
Our Boarding House (1878), Lord Travers in
Hazel Kirke (1880), and the rugged farmer Dave Hardy in
Esmeralda (1881). Plympton later spent several seasons playing leads opposite Mary
Anderson and supporting Edwin
Booth in several productions, including Laertes in an all‐star performance of
Hamlet. Among his subsequent roles were King Philip II in
In the Palace of the King (1901), Sir Harcourt Courtly in
London Assurance (1905), and the Bishop in
The Duel (1906). Otis
Skinner remembered him as “talented, forceful, but extremely temperamental and egotistical.”
