Mamoulian, Rouben (1897–1987), director. Born in Russia, the son of an actress, and educated in Paris and Moscow, he worked at the Eastman School of Music before coming to New York to take employment with the Theatre Guild where he staged highly praised mountings of Porgy (1927), Marco Millions (1928), and Wings over Europe (1928). All his subsequent important theatrical work was with musicals: Porgy and Bess (1935), Oklahoma! (1943), Carousel (1945), and Lost in the Stars (1949). Mamoulian was known for his excellent handling of crowd scenes and for an overall sense of theatrically rhythmic movement. He was also highly admired as a film director. Biography: Rouben Mamoulian, Tom Miln, 1969.
