Majority of One, A

Majority of One, A (1959), a comedy by Leonard Spigelgass. [Shubert Theatre, 556 perf.] Mrs. Jacoby ( Gertrude Berg), a Brooklyn housewife who lost a son fighting the Japanese, and Koichi Asano ( Cedric Hardwicke), a businessman who lost a daughter at Hiroshima, meet on shipboard. At first they turn their larger, national resentments against each other, but with time they overcome their prejudices to reach perhaps more than an affectionate understanding. The Theatre Guild and Dore Schary co‐produced the warmhearted comedy, helped to success by the ebullient Berg, who had been famous as radio's Molly Goldberg, and the distinguished British actor Hardwicke. The Jewish Repertory Theatre revived the play with interest in 1999 with Phyllis Newman and Randall Duk Kim.
