Jesus Christ Superstar

Jesus Christ Superstar (1971). This “rock opera” by Andrew Lloyd Webber (music) and Tim Rice (lyrics) began as a hit song, then was a concept album, followed by concert versions in major cities, then finally a London stage musical. By the time the rock version of the last seven days in the life of Christ opened at the Mark Hellinger Theatre, it was fairly familiar to audiences. Director Tom O'Horgan gave the Robert Stigwood production a campy, anachronistic, and sometimes outrageous staging, and the public vetoed the mostly negative reviews, keeping it on the boards for 720 performances. Notable songs: Jesus Christ Superstar; I Don't Know How to Love Him; Heaven on Their Minds; Everything's Alright. Broadway revivals in 1977, 1995, and 2000 all failed to run, but the rock musical continues to be popular in amateur theatre.
