Isaacs, Edith J(uliet) R(ich)

Isaacs, Edith J[uliet] R[ich] (1878–1956), critic and author. Born in Milwaukee and educated at Downer College, she served as drama critic for Ainslee's Magazine in 1913. In 1918 she became editor of Theatre Arts magazine and retained that post until 1946. Under her aegis the magazine was the leading intellectual theatrical periodical of the era. Isaacs also edited Theatre: Essays on the Arts of the Theatre (1927) and Plays of American Life and Fantasy (1929) and wrote The Negro in the American Theatre (1947).
