Hoffman, Dustin (b. 1937), actor. A native of Los Angeles, he studied acting at the
Pasadena Playhouse and with Lee
Strasberg, among others, before winning fine notices Off‐Broadway in the mid‐1960s and on Broadway in
Jimmy Shine (1968), then engaging in a long, highly successful film career. But Hoffman returned to Broadway with an original interpretation of Willy Loman in
Death of a Salesman (1984) and as Shylock in
The Merchant of Venice (1989), which he had originally played in London.
