Hewes, Henry (b. 1917), critic. He was born in Boston and educated at Harvard, Carnegie Tech, and Columbia before he started doing theatre reviews for the
New York Times in 1948. But much of Hewes's career was spent at the
Saturday Review, where he worked for over forty years, gaining a reputation for writing direct and pointed reviews. He served as editor of the
Best Plays in the 1960s and edited other theatre books as well. In 1999 the
American Theatre Wing changed the name of its recognition in design to the Henry Hewes Awards.
