Girardot, Etienne

Girardot, Etienne (1856–1939), actor. One of many performers remembered for a single role, the London‐born actor captivated Broadway when he made his New York debut as Lord Fancourt Babberley, who helps his college roommate by dressing as an old lady and pretending he is Charley's Aunt (1893). He later played in several revivals of the farce. Although Girardot continued to appear regularly for the next forty years, often in important supporting roles, he never again equaled his early success. Among his other roles was Valentine, opposite Mrs. Fiske, in Leah Kleschna (1904). His last assignment was as the religious zealot Matthew Clark in Twentieth Century (1932).
