Gear, Luella [Gardner van Nort] (1899–1980), actress. The New Yorker made her debut in the 1917 musical Love o' Mike and over the next decade used her often acid, knowing style of comedy to win increasingly important roles in such comedies and musicals as The Gold Diggers (1919), Poppy (1923), and Queen High (1926). Gear enjoyed major assignments in Gay Divorce (1932), Life Begins at 8:40 (1934), and On Your Toes (1936). In later years her best role was the bitter worldling Julia McKinlock in Sabrina Fair (1953).
