Foster, Frances [neé Frances Helen Brown] (1924–97), actress. Foster was a versatile African‐American performer who was also a founding member of the Negro Ensemble Company, where she gave some of her finest performances. She was born in Yonkers, New York, and trained with the American Theatre Wing before making her Manhattan debut in 1955. Three years later Foster was on Broadway replacing actresses in supporting roles while she played major ones Off Broadway. She was most effective as sassy, outspoken types, frail victims, and wise grandmothers. Among her many notable performances were the Barbados slave Tituba in The Crucible (1958), the crusty grandmother in The River Niger (1973), the reflective Gremmar in The First Breeze of Summer (1975), and the Harlem derelict Henrietta (1985).
