East West Players (Los Angeles). The nation's first Asian‐American regional theatre company, it was started in 1965 by five Asian‐American artists who wished to improve the conditions for other actors, writers, and directors who were stereotyped in mainstream American theatre. At first the troupe presented world classics with Asian actors, but in the 1970s, under the leadership of artistic director–actor Mako, the company started to emphasize new works written by Asian Americans. The plays of David Henry
Hwang and others helped bring the group recognition. In 1998 the company moved from its 99‐seat black box to a 240‐seat facility named the David Henry Hwang Theatre, located in the Union Center of the Arts in Los Angeles's “Little Tokyo” district.
