Come Back, Little Sheba

Come Back, Little Sheba (1950), a drama by William Inge. [Booth Theatre,190 perf.] Doc ( Sidney Blackmer) is an alcoholic (temporarily on the wagon) who has never finished medical school. His wife, Lola ( Shirley Booth), is a slatternly housewife, forever dreaming of their cute puppy, Little Sheba, who long ago ran away. Doc is concerned about their boarder, Marie ( Joan Lorring), a young college girl. He resents her beaux, not quite aware that he is jealous of them. When he realizes the girl will soon marry, he goes on a binge. Home from the hospital, he and Lola settle back into their humdrum existence. Inge's first play opened to sharply divided notices, the main strength of the Theatre Guild production came from the performances of the two principals, who won virtually every possible award for their acting. The play itself hinted at the layers of repressed sexuality that would become the major preoccupation of Inge's later works.
