Cook) is a successful architect living on a colonial farm he has lovingly restored. He is more or less happily married, although he is not certain about this matter since his beautiful wife Claudia ( Dorothy McGuire) has never quite grown up. She has a mother‐fixation and never seems entirely sure of her sexual appeal. When she impetuously sells the farm to an opera singer and has a brief flirtation with a handsome young Englishman, David is exasperated. Then Claudia learns that her mother ( Frances
Starr) is dying and she seems suddenly to mature. “Yes, it's like a miracle,” her mother remarks. “It's just as if she were the mother and I were the child.” Claudia agrees to return the opera singer's check and to settle down to being a wife. Franken's first play since
