Cassidy, Claudia

Cassidy, Claudia (1900–96), critic. A native of Shawneetown, Illinois, she studied at the University of Illinois before beginning to write on the arts for the Chicago Journal of Commerce in 1925. Cassidy moved to the Chicago Sun in 1941 and to the Tribune a year later, remaining there until her retirement in 1965. By far the most influential critic in the Midwest, she was often condemned for the severity of her judgments but insisted she was merely attempting to battle lowering standards in touring productions. Variety noted, “She almost singlehandedly stopped the process of Broadway producers sending third‐rate versions of New York hits on the road.”
