California Theatre (San Francisco). William Ralston, the head of San Francisco's Bank of California, was so impressed by the work of two fine performers, John McCullough and Lawrence Barrett, that he offered to build a theatre for them. The playhouse opened on Bush Street in 1869 and for many years was home for the finest company away from the East Coast. The house was designed by S. C. Bugbee and Son, and cost $150,000. Under various managements the theatre remained the city's leading playhouse until it was demolished in 1888. Another theatre, using the same name, was erected on the site and continued to flourish until it was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire, but this second house, having to buck increasing competition, never enjoyed the prestige of the first.
