Caldwell, James H. (1793–1863), actor and manager. Coming to America from England in 1816, he made his acting debut as Belcour in The West Indian first in Charleston then in New York. Although he was an actor of some repute and continued performing until 1843, Caldwell was best known as a builder and manager of theatres in Cincinnati, Mobile, Nashville, and St. Louis. However, he is most remembered for his work in New Orleans, where he managed the St. Philip Street Theatre and the American Theatre, in which he introduced the use of gas lighting. In 1835 he erected the St. Charles Theatre, the city's prime playhouse for many years. In his Dramatic Life as I Found It, Noah M. Ludlow draws a vivid picture of the man.
