American Theatre Critics Association

American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA). Founded in 1974 by some of the most distinguished of American drama critics, it has among its stated purposes: 1) “To make possible greater communication among American theatre critics”; 2) “To encourage absolute freedom of expression in theatre and theatre criticism”; 3) “To advance standards of theatre by advancing standards of theatre criticism”; and 4) “To increase public awareness of the theatre as a vital national resource.” The ATCA annually recommends a Tony Award to be given to an outstanding regional theatre and offers special events and luncheon lectures. Affiliated with the Association Internationale des Critiques de Théâtre, it played an important role in the release of two South African actors from imprisonment.
