temperature In biology, intensity of heat. In warm-blooded (
homeothermic) animals, body temperature is maintained within narrow limits regardless of the temperature of their surroundings. This is accomplished by muscular activity, the operation of cooling mechanisms, such as vasodilation, vasoconstriction and sweating, and metabolic activity. In humans, normal body temperature is
c.36.9°C (98.4°F), but this varies with degree of activity. In so-called cold-blooded (
poikilothermic) animals, body temperature varies between wider limits, depending on the temperature of the surroundings.
