sexual reproduction
sexual reproduction Biological process of reproduction involving the combination of genetic material from two parents. It occurs in different forms throughout the plant and animal kingdoms. This process gives rise to variations of the
genotype (genetic makeup) and
phenotype (physical characteristics) within a species.
Gametes,
haploid sex cells produced by
meiosis, contain only half the number of
chromosomes of their parent cells (which are
diploid). At
fertilization, the gametes, generally one from each parent, fuse to form a
zygote with the diploid number of chromosomes. The zygote divides repeatedly and the cells differentiate to give rise to an
embryo and, finally, a fully formed organism.
