pregnancy Period of time from conception until birth, in humans normally
c.40 weeks (280 days). It is generally divided into three 3-month periods called trimesters. In the
first trimester, the
embryo grows from a small ball of cells to a
fetus c.7.6cm (3in) in length. At the beginning of the
second trimester, movements are first felt and the fetus grows to about 36cm (14in). In the
third trimester, the fetus attains its full body weight. See also
