plankton All the floating or drifting life of the ocean, especially that near the surface. The organisms are very small and move with the currents. There are two main kinds:
phytoplankton, floating plants such as
diatoms and dinoflagellates; and
zooplankton, floating animals such as radiolarians, plus the larvae and eggs of larger marine animals. They are a vital part of the food chain.
