molecule Smallest particle of a substance (such as a compound) that exhibits the properties of that substance. Molecules consist of two or more atoms held together by
chemical bonds. For example, water molecules consist of two atoms of hydrogen bonded to one atom of oxygen (H
2O). A
macromolecule can be up to 1000 times greater in diameter. A molecule (unlike an
ion) has no electrical charge. Molecules were first hypothesized in 1811 by Italian physicist Amedeo
Avogadro and first detected by Scottish botanist Robert Brown.
