incarnation Act of appearing in or assuming bodily form, especially the assumption of human form by a divine being. All orthodox Christians believe that the eternal Son of God, the creator and sole deity, took on bodily form and lived on Earth as a mortal human being, Jesus of Nazareth. The doctrine of the Incarnation was confirmed amid controversy by the first general council of the Church at
Nicaea in 325.
