extrasensory perception (ESP) Perception that takes place outside the known sensory systems. The term covers alleged parapsychological phenomena such as clairvoyance, telepathy and precognition. Although the validity of the phenomena has been questioned by the traditional methods of physical science, ESP has been the subject of serious investigation, beginning with the establishment in 1882 in London of the Society for Psychical Research.
