conic
conic (conic section) Curve found by the intersection of a plane with a cone. Circles, ellipses, parabolas or hyperbolas are conic sections. Alternatively a conic is the locus of a point that moves so that the ratio of its distances from a fixed point (the focus) and a fixed line (the directrix) is constant. This ratio is called the eccentricity (
e):
e = 1 gives a parabola,
e >1 a hyperbola,
e <1 an ellipse, and
e = 0 a circle.
