caesium (symbol Cs) Rare silvery-white metallic element in group I of the
periodic table; the most alkaline and electropositive element. Discovered in 1860 by German chemist Robert
Bunsen and German physicist Gustav
Kirchhoff, caesium is ductile and used commercially in
photoelectric cells. The isotope Cs
137 is used in cancer treatments. The decay rate of its most common isotope Cs
133 is the standard for measuring time. Properties: at.no. 55; r.a.m. 132.9055; r.d. 1.87; m.p. 28.4°C (83.1°F); b.p. 678°C (1252.4°F). See also
