breathing
breathing Process by which air is taken into and expelled from the
lungs for the purpose of
gas exchange. During inhalation, the intercostal muscles raise the ribs, increasing the volume of the
thorax and drawing air into the lungs. During exhalation, the ribs are lowered, and air is forced out through the nose, and sometimes also the mouth.
