abortion Termination of pregnancy before a
fetus is sufficiently advanced to survive outside the mother's
uterus.
Spontaneous abortion (miscarriage) occurs in
c.20% of apparently normal pregnancies. Miscarriages in the first three months of pregnancy are usually caused by fetal abnormalities. Miscarriages later in pregnancy may be caused by defects in the maternal environment, such as reproductive system disorders.
Induced or
therapeutic abortion is the termination of pregnancy by drugs or surgery. The rights of the fetus and the mother's right to choose provoke much political and ethical debate. Currently, the legal time-limit in the UK for an induced abortion is up to 24 weeks after conception.
