Wyszynski, Cardinal Stefan (1901–81) Polish Roman Catholic cardinal. As Archbishop of Gniezno and Warsaw and Primate of Poland from 1948, he protested to communist authorities against the accusations launched against the Church during the trial of Bishop Kaczmarek of Kielce. In 1952, Pope Pius XII appointed him Cardinal. Wyszynski was imprisoned from 1953 to 1956. In 1957, he was allowed to go to Rome to receive the honour of a cardinal's hat. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, as leader of Poland's Roman Catholics, he played an active mediating role between the workers and government authorities.
