Tambo, Oliver
Tambo, Oliver (1917–93) South African politician, president (1977–90) of the
African National Congress (ANC). He joined the ANC in 1944. In 1960, Tambo left South Africa to organize the external activities of the ANC. During Nelson
Mandela's long imprisonment, Tambo served first as acting president (1967–76) then full president of the ANC. On Mandela's release, he relinquished the post. See also
