Purcell, Henry (1659–95) English composer and organist of the Baroque period. He is most famous for his church music, much of which is still frequently performed. His only opera, Dido and Aeneas (1689), was the first English opera and is regarded as an early masterpiece of the form. His many other stage works include The Fairy Queen (1692).
