Pérez de Cuéllar, Javier
Pérez de Cuéllar, Javier (1920– ) Peruvian diplomat, fifth secretary-general of the
United Nations (UN) (1982–91). He emerged as a successful compromise candidate following opposition to the re-election of Kurt
Waldheim. He earned a reputation for skillful diplomacy in the cease-fire agreements at the end of the
Falklands War (1982) and the
Iran-Iraq War (1980–88). He was succeeded by Boutros
Boutros-Ghali.
