Pearson, Lester Bowles
Pearson, Lester Bowles (1897–1972) Canadian statesman and diplomat, prime minister (1963–68). A distinguished diplomatic career culminated in his appointment (1945) as head of Canada's delegation to the United Nations
(UN). Pearson acted as President of the General Assembly (1952–53). In 1948, he entered the Canadian Parliament as a Liberal and was Secretary of State for External Affairs (1948–63). Pearson's efforts in resolving the Suez Crisis earned him the 1957 Nobel Peace Prize. In 1958, he became leader of the
Liberal Party. He succeeded John Diefenbaker as prime minister. His term was marked by health and social welfare reforms.
