Madison, James (1751–1836) Fourth US president (1809–17). Madison was a close adviser to George Washington until, dismayed by the growing power of the executive, he broke with the Federalist Party, his former allies. He became associated with Thomas Jefferson and the Democratic-Republican Party. Jefferson made Madison secretary of state in 1801, and he succeeded Jefferson in the presidency, winning the election easily in spite of his association with the unsuccessful Embargo Act (1807). As president, he was unable to avoid the War of 1812 with Britain, which provoked threats of secession in New England. The successful conclusion of the war restored national prosperity, and Madison, the ‘Father of the Constitution’, retired to his Virginia plantation as an admired elder statesman.
