Giotto ( di Bondone) (c.1266–1337) Florentine painter. A pupil of Cimabue, he is a central figure of the early Renaissance. Giotto rejected the stylized form of Italo-Byzantine art in favour of a more realistic style, best represented by the frescos (c.1305–08) in the Arena Chapel, Padua. As architect of Florence, he designed the campanile of the Duomo.
