Franz Ferdinand
Franz Ferdinand (1863–1914) Archduke of Austria. Nephew of
Franz Joseph, he became heir apparent in 1889. On June 28, 1914, on an official visit to Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Franz and his wife were assassinated by Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip. The incident led directly to the outbreak of
World War I.
