Doppler effect
Doppler effect
Doppler effect Change in frequency of a wave, when there is relative motion between the wave source and the observer. The amount of change depends on the velocities of the wave, source and observer. With a sound wave, the effect is demonstrated by the drop in pitch of a vehicle's siren as it passes an observer. With light, the velocity of the source or observer must be large for an appreciable effect to occur, such as the red shift of a rapidly receding galaxy. This effect was first described in 1842 by the Austrian physicist Christian Johann
