Davis, Miles Dewey
Davis, Miles Dewey (1926–91) US jazz trumpeter, one of the most influential modern jazz musicians. During the 1940s, he played
be-bop with Charlie
Parker. Eager to experiment with diverse musical forms, he changed the course of jazz with the sophisticated and reflective
Birth of the Cool (1949), and played with the saxophonist John
Coltrane on the seminal
Kind of Blue (1959). During the late 1960s, he switched to electric instrumentation, and was a pioneer of jazz-rock. In the 1970s and 1980s, he gained considerable commercial success.
