Constance
Constance (Konstanz) City-port on Lake Constance, Baden-Württemberg,
sw Germany. Founded as a Roman fort in the 4th century
ad, it became a free imperial city in 1183, and was the site of the Council of
Constance (1414–18) which ended the
Great Schism. Constance passed to Austria in 1548 and to Baden in 1805. Notable sites include an 11th-century cathedral and the Kaufhaus (1388). Industries: tourism, textiles, chemicals. Pop. (2002 est.) 78,000.
