John Constable
Constable, John
Constable, John (1776–1837) English painter, a leading western landscapist. He attended the Royal Academy (1795–1802) and studied the paintings of
Claude Lorrain. He considered every effect of clouds and light on water, often using broken colour and a thick impasto texture. His first success came when
The Haywain (1821) and
View on the Stour (1817) were shown at the 1824 Paris Salon, although recognition in England only came after his death. He had a great impact on French romantic artists, notably
Delacroix.
