Coltrane, John William (1926–67) US jazz saxophonist, one of the leading innovators of the 1950s and 1960s. He played with Dizzy Gillespie (1949–51) and Miles Davis (1955–57) before forming his own seminal quartet in 1960. He established a reputation as an intense musician and technical virtuoso. He was a primary exponent of the ‘modal’ improvisation technique. A Love Supreme (1964) is his masterpiece.
