Cobb, Ty (Tyrus) Raymond

Cobb, Ty (Tyrus) Raymond (1886–1961) US baseball player. Cobb is major league baseball's all-time leading hitter with a .367 lifetime batting average. He played for the Detroit Tigers (1905–26) and the Philadelphia Athletics (1927–28), winning 12 batting championships. His career total of 4,191 hits remained a record until 1985, surpassed by Pete Rose. The “Georgia Peach” was also an expert base runner, stealing 892 bases. Cobb became the first member of the Baseball Hall of Fame (1936).
