Chrétien, (Joseph-Jacques) Jean (1934– ) 20th prime minister (1993–2003) of Canada. He entered Parliament in 1963, and was a member of Pierre Trudeau's cabinet. In 1990 he became leader of the Liberal Party. Chrétien won a landslide victory in the 1993 elections and was re-elected, with a much reduced majority, in 1997 and again in 2000. His main challenges were to reduce unemployment and to maintain the federation against the threat of secession from Québec. In 2003, he resigned and was succeeded by Paul Martin.
